Jefferson County pledges letter of support and contingent $150,000 for animal shelter READY grant

Jefferson County commissioners and the council discussed plans for a regional animal shelter and agreed to provide a letter of support and a contingent pledge to strengthen a READY grant application.

Staff reported the shelter operation budget and a building fund balance (about $180,000 as of 12/31/2025). Speakers discussed whether the county should commit funds in advance. Speaker 6 proposed a conditional pledge of $150,000 contingent on the county being awarded the grant; Speaker 1 seconded and the motion to draft a letter of support and prepare the pledge for signature carried by voice vote.

Officials emphasized that the pledge is contingent on the grant award and not an immediate appropriation. Speaker 4 said staff will draft the letter and circulate it for signatures, and that the county will explore moving any year‑end shelter fund surplus into a building fund if appropriate.

The boards encouraged continued fundraising by project leaders and said they would reconvene to finalize any appropriation only after the grant outcome is known.
