The Roanoke County Board of Supervisors on May 14 proclaimed May 2024 as Business Appreciation Month and recognized several small-business owners and long-serving volunteer firefighters for their community service.
Megan Baker, Roanoke County director of economic development, joined owners Chaffin and Whitney Scott of Basil's Farm Market and Gifts at the podium as the board presented the proclamation and thanked local businesses for "fostering an attractive and prosperous economic environment in Roanoke County." Whitney Scott described the market's focus on local, pasture-raised meat and artisan goods and said the owners were "proud to bring it to our community." The board adopted the proclamation by voice and roll call.
Later the board recognized four members of the Mount Pleasant Volunteer Fire Department. Tammy Shepherd introduced resolutions honoring Patrick Ehler (22 years), David Riddle (22 years), Kent Henson (40 years) and Dean Rohrer (53 years) for their combined 137 years of volunteer service. The clerk read the resolution language describing promotions and training contributions; family and fellow volunteers accepted the honors and the board adopted the resolutions in a single unanimous vote.
Board members used the recognition period to praise volunteerism and to note the department recently recruited eight new volunteers over two months. Several supervisors thanked the honorees for long service and urged others to consider volunteering.
What happens next: The proclamations and resolutions are part of the public record and will be included in the county's minutes and recognition materials.
