At its April 9 meeting the Roanoke County Board of Supervisors approved a suite of tax-related resolutions, including the county’s Personal Property Tax Relief Act (PPTRA) allocation and the 2024 tax rates for real estate, personal property and machinery and tools.
Laurie Gearhart, director of finance and management services, explained the PPTRA block grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia and recommended a PPTRA allocation of 44.79% for calendar-year 2024; the board moved, seconded and approved the resolution on a roll call vote with the recorded responses in the meeting packet.
During a statutorily required public hearing on the county’s tax rates, budget administrator Steve Elliott said no citizens signed up to speak and the board closed the hearing. The board then approved a motion to set the 2024 real estate tax rate at $1.04 per $100 of assessed value. Separately, the board adopted the personal property tax rate at $3.40 per $100 and the machinery & tools rate at $2.80 per $100; each measure passed on roll call.
The board also adopted the consent agenda by a recorded vote; the consent agenda included, among routine items, an appointment to the Library Advisory Board (Catawba Magisterial District) that had been added earlier in the meeting.
No citizen comments were received during the public hearing. The board then recessed for scheduled work sessions and approved a motion to enter closed session to discuss real property acquisition and prospective business expansions in Cave Spring and Catawba Magisterial Districts under Virginia Code §2.2-3711(A)(3) and (A)(5).
