Giles County board approves MOU with TNTP and budget amendment to accept literacy grant

The Giles County School Board voted to approve a memorandum of understanding with TNTP to implement a competitive literacy grant and approved a budget amendment to account for receipt of the funds.

During new business the board discussed the competitive award and the contract language required to formalize the relationship between the Tennessee Department of Education, TNTP and the local board. The transcript states the award allocates $80,000 to TNTP and $10,000 to the Board of Education, for a total of $90,000; the board approved the MOU and then moved the related budget amendment.

Board members also discussed moving local funds to pay registration for school resource officers to attend an annual conference; the motion approving the budget amendment and the registration funding was made and approved by voice vote.

The record shows the TNTP agreement was presented as a follow-up to an earlier, state-level contract and noted the grant was competitive, with only 50 awards statewide. The board authorized the district to finalize the MOU and process the budget amendment so staff can proceed with implementation.
