House approves Georgia–Ireland Trade Commission to boost bilateral ties

The Georgia House voted to create a Georgia–Ireland Trade Commission aimed at expanding bilateral trade and academic exchanges. House Bill 980, presented by Representative Bonner, passed the House by a 166–2 recorded vote.

Bonner told members the commission would be a 15‑member body — four appointees from the House, four from the Senate and seven appointed by the governor — tasked with advancing trade and investment ties with Ireland. "There’s no cost to the taxpayer as the commission will raise funds to do its work," Bonner said, adding that Georgia Southern University maintains a campus near Wexford and that Irish-owned companies employ "over 10,000 Georgians."

Members asked procedural and representational questions. Representative Shay Roberts said she supported the bill and noted a suggestion to reserve one of the House seats for an Irish citizen; Bonner said he appreciated the input. Representative Tran and others highlighted Ireland’s medical-technology sector and the potential benefits of strengthened ties for Georgia’s port and research partnerships.

The committee report was agreed to without objection and the House passed HB 980. Supporters framed the measure as a formal way to deepen an existing trade and cultural relationship; sponsors said the commission would seek private funding to operate.
