Kenilworth Police: 1,326 calls for service in January; department discusses snow enforcement

Councilman Fenistrella reported the Kenilworth Police Department responded to 1,326 calls for service and 192 9-1-1 calls in January, and logged 78 overtime hours across patrol and dispatch. He said the department completed 68 training hours, issued 234 traffic summonses and made five arrests during the month.

Fenistrella reminded residents to follow borough parking ordinances during and after snowfall, noting that enforcement is time-consuming and sometimes hampered by vehicles buried in snow. Councilman Scurry added that officers issued "over 200 summonses" during the January snow events and described practical servicing limits when vehicles are covered in ice.

Police and council members discussed enforcement options including fines, mailed summonses, and selective towing; no ordinance changes were voted on during the meeting. Officials directed staff to draft an SOP related to snow enforcement, which should clarify ticketing procedures, hardship exceptions and coordination with DPW.

The department also encouraged residents to register for Everbridge notifications and to report parking or nuisance complaints so police can respond.
