Parents urge Punxsutawney Area SD to add multidisability classroom at high school

Nikki Agnello, a parent of two students including one with significant disabilities, asked the board to expand a recently opened elementary multidisability classroom model to the high school so students could continue in‑district supports.

"Continuity is key for a lot of kids," Agnello said, urging the district to avoid sending students to neighboring districts and to provide inclusion that benefits all students. She told the board that keeping her son in‑district would reduce travel stress, maintain friendships and help him graduate with his peers.

Agonello also argued the expansion could be financially advantageous long term, by attracting families seeking local supports and by strengthening the district's services. The board acknowledged the request and the superintendent said the staffing and logistics are being examined; the issue was placed on the district's next meeting agenda for further discussion.

The board did not take a formal vote on the request during the meeting; staff said they are examining staffing logistics and will present more detailed options at a future meeting.
