Council holds closed-session discussion on detention center, sends exploration to building committee

Chesterfield County Council entered executive session to discuss negotiations and receive legal advice concerning the detention center, then returned to open session and directed further study and committee review.

Mister Bryant stated the council was entering executive session under a statutory provision to discuss negotiations, proposed contractual agreements and attorney-client matters covering the detention center. The chair said counsel may take action on agenda item 17(a) after the executive session.

Council entered and exited executive session; the chair reported that no motions or votes were taken during the closed session. Council members said the detention center raised collective concern and discussed the possibility of exploring a new facility. The chair directed the issue to the building committee with Mister Ford to take it up.

Next steps: The building committee will examine options for the county's detention center, including potential replacement or renovation, and will report recommendations back to the full council.
