Bedford County School Board elects leaders, agrees to trial work‑session format

The Bedford County School Board on Jan. 8 elected Chris Daniels as chair and Dr. Hubach as vice chair and moved to supplement standing committees with bi‑monthly board work sessions intended to give all seven members the same information before policy votes.

Board members unanimously approved the organizational items and a request from the superintendent to reschedule the April meeting from April 9 to April 16 to avoid spring break. The superintendent opened the meeting by welcoming the board’s newest member, Jill Dobson (District 4).

In presenting the work‑session proposal, the superintendent said the goal is to “give all seven of you eyes on every topic” and avoid leaving members out of committee discussions. Staff and several board members described the plan as a way to consolidate discussion on large or complex topics—such as curriculum adoption, budget priorities and facilities work—while retaining committees for ongoing technical oversight (facilities/CIP and some special projects would continue to meet monthly).

Board discussion focused on process: how topics get placed on a work‑session agenda, how committees would be used for special projects (for example, CPO for textbook adoptions), and how members could request meetings. Several members said they preferred keeping committees available for focused review and using work sessions for broader case‑study discussion; staff said committees would still meet informally or by phone as needed.

Chair Daniels asked for and received consensus to pilot the work‑session format in addition to the committee structure. The board approved the listed organizational appointments (deputy superintendent, clerk, deputy clerk and board agent) by voice vote later in the meeting.

The meeting closed its governance business after routine committee assignments and the chair encouraged board members to use the new format to improve shared knowledge and public transparency.
