The Eureka City Council read two proclamations and heard public comment on March 12.
Councilmember Katie Moulton read a proclamation recognizing the Eureka Lodge (Sons and Daughters of Italy) centennial and invited lodge representatives to receive the proclamation in chambers. The council also proclaimed March 2024 as Brain Injury Awareness Month and thanked the Making Headway Center for its local work.
During public comment, Roman Dylan Fierro of Eureka criticized the city’s land acknowledgment, saying it "seems like you may be exceeding the bounds of your authority" and citing Article 3, Section 1 of the California Constitution in his remarks. Micah Star, an educator, spoke about PTSD, veterans and community trauma and urged conversation about the need for a ceasefire and ending war. "I find people in the community who think similarly to me... I thank you all for listening and for remaining open to conversations about the need for a ceasefire," Star said.
Eileen Barch asked the council to inspect and repair raised yellow detectable‑warning tiles near Sequoia Park, saying those "have raised up enough, which could result in people tripping, especially the visually impaired." The council acknowledged the concern and moved on to the consent calendar.
No council action was taken on public comment items; proclamations were ceremonial and accepted by attendees.
