Committee reviews K–5 science pilot plan; committee member moves to recommend to full board

District staff presented a K–5 science pilot plan at the Teaching and Learning Committee meeting on Feb. 3, outlining units by grade level, teacher representation and pilot logistics.

The plan lists two units for year one with an optional third unit to be added later; staff said the selected units are mapped to priority grade‑level standards. Pilot staffing is planned to include teachers from Amityville, County Line, Mac and Rockfield elementary schools, and staff said 31 teachers have agreed to pilot a unit this spring to ensure cross‑building representation and grade‑band coverage.

Staff told the committee that the district’s current vendor provided digital access to curricular units and had shipped sample kits so teachers could examine materials; staff also said not all kits were shipped for every unit yet. To support teachers during piloting, staff said teachers within a school would use the same kit or unit at the same grade level so they have on‑site counterparts for collaboration and troubleshooting.
