Mr. Straub, presenting the Economic Development update, said building permits issued for January totaled $2,556,500 and that three new businesses had been permitted, including a software contractor supporting the U.S. Navy. He said he will present a continuing pipeline of building-permit data to help the committee track investment.
Straub credited coordinated pre-storm outreach and a multi-department response for clearing snow and ice after a winter storm, noting cooperation among businesses, Office of Emergency Management, public works and contractor Whiting Turner. He reported Dock Street’s sidewalks and curb areas had been cleared and praised the response.
On Dock Street construction and operations, Straub outlined several near-term actions: new directional and informational signage along the construction fencing; plans for a 15-minute pickup/drop-off area with two parallel parking spaces to help visitors and employees with accessibility needs; biweekly coordination meetings with Whiting Turner to resolve construction-business conflicts; and coordination with the Annapolis Police Department for traffic direction if needed. Straub also said staff is exploring a Magenta shuttle stop on Craig Street to serve Dock Street and is discussing striping and parking adjustments with public works.
Committee members asked about the number and layout of parking spaces, accessible/van spaces and timeline. Straub said striping decisions are with Public Works and that parallel spaces must conform with city code (23 feet for parallel stalls). He said he was awaiting final confirmation of the pickup/drop-off timeline from public works and APD but expected progress soon.
Straub said the Dock Street work aims to increase foot traffic and support small businesses and that staff will continue to report back at future meetings.
