BRANDON JACKSON, chairman of the Prince George's County Board of Education, said the board voted to close its Nov. 6 special virtual meeting to the public so members could hear oral arguments related to personnel and legal matters.
"This meeting is convened to hear oral arguments in keeping with the board's rule of procedure," Jackson said, reading the board's statement explaining the closure. He cited General Provision Article 3-305(b) and said the board expected to discuss "employees' identities and ongoing or anticipated legal disputes" that, in the chair's words, "could result in financial losses, damage to reputation, or legal consequences."
The roll call to close was taken by Miss Johnson, the meeting clerk. The board recorded seven affirmative votes; Jackson declared the motion adopted and instructed members to exit the public meeting and promptly join the special closed session through a calendar link. No discussion was offered on the motion before the roll call.
The board also reiterated its Internet meeting rules for virtual sessions: members should keep their video on, remain muted until recognized, unmute to speak and mute after finishing, and may speak twice on any motion for two minutes each. The chair added a safety reminder for members not to speak while driving.
The closed session is exempt from public attendance under the cited statutory provisions because it involves the discussion of personnel matters and litigation strategy. The public portion ended at about 5:33 p.m., and the board moved into the closed session as announced.
