Resident urges stronger coyote safety measures and calls alleged rumor 'slander' at Laguna Woods council meeting

A resident during public comment at the Feb. 4 Laguna Woods City Council meeting urged the council to address rising coyote incidents in the village and accused a fellow community member of circulating a false rumor that the speaker had a financial interest in a coyote sterilization company.

The resident said there had been "two more attacks" in the village and referenced a San Diego County case where a child was chased and bitten. The speaker said inaccurate information circulated by local animal-safety groups and others was harming community understanding and protective measures. The resident also said a person "said to a few of my friends" that the speaker had a financial stake in a coyote-control company and called the allegation "defamation of my character. That's slander." The clerk ended the speaker's allotted time at the three-minute mark.

City staff did not take formal action during the public comment period. A city official said staff would follow up on the information the resident cited and would engage with neighboring agencies discussed by the commenter. During the closed-session announcement, the city attorney clarified that the closed-session items unrelated to the coyote matter: "it has nothing to do with coyotes." After returning from closed session the city attorney reported there were "no reportable actions."

Why it matters: Laguna Woods residents have raised public-safety concerns about wildlife encounters; council or staff follow-up determines whether additional public-safety messaging, animal-control measures or coordination with state wildlife authorities will be pursued. The allegation of a defamatory rumor, raised publicly, was recorded in the meeting minutes and may be subject to separate civil remedies outside the council process.

The council adjourned after the closed-session report and scheduled its next regular meeting for Feb. 18, 2026, at 2 p.m.
