The Vermillion School District 13-1 board voted Feb. 12 to allow Vermillion Fire & EMS to reserve the district auditorium and commons for a two‑day firefighter training planned for November. Mike Murrah, representing Vermillion Fire & EMS, asked to hold four classes (two on Saturday and two on Sunday, 8 a.m.–5 p.m.), with meals on site to keep attendees between sessions. He estimated 150–200 attendees but said the event could shift to the fire station if turnout is small.
Murrah named two nationally known speakers expected to attend: Chief John Salka (former FDNY battalion chief) and Chief Rick Lasky (veteran fire chief). He said the department needs district audiovisual support including lapel microphones and screens and that dates had been cleared with the school.
A board member who said he is a former firefighter moved the motion; a second was recorded and the board voted in favor. The motion passed. Chair called for paperwork to be completed and the district will process the facilities-use permit.
The board did not set fees or special conditions in the public discussion; Murrah said the department would fill out the required paperwork with the district office. The approval allows the department to reserve the space on the district calendar and proceed with logistical planning.
