Downingtown presenters map 'portrait of a graduate' with five pillars, plan to publish working document by May

District curriculum and administrative leaders updated the board on efforts to turn the strategic-plan concept of a "portrait of a graduate" into a working document showing milestones and student experiences across K–12.

Presenters said the portrait centers on five pillars: ready for college, career and life; critical thinking and problem solving; responsible community member; health and wellness; and skilled communicator and collaborator. Staff described a task force process that included principals, teachers and community stakeholders and said students will participate in February focus groups; a rough draft will be shared with families via survey in mid-March and staff aim to present working documents to the board in May.

As part of the effort, staff reported an audit of extracurricular activities and engagement data indicating about 82% of students participate in at least one activity either in or associated with the district. Communications staff are consolidating program listings on the district website so families can view milestones, clubs and activities in one place. Presenters said the task force will remain active to keep the resource updated and that staff plan a public forum in May to gather community feedback and explain how strategic priorities intersect with capital needs.

Board members asked about keeping the display current; staff said communications staff will run a scheduled review of pages and contact program owners when content appears out of date. The board did not take action on the item; it was presented as an update.
