Westminster to dedicate Sons of the American Revolution marker; cemetery website goes live

Commission members announced that the Westminster Cemetery received a commemorative marker from the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and scheduled a dedication event for Sunday, April 19 at 2 p.m. The marker recognizes three patriots interred in the cemetery and was described as the first such patriot marker in the state for the Sons of the American Revolution; the physical marker is in the city’s maintenance shed pending installation.

Separately, a commission member reported that a cemetery website funded through the related grant is live. The site includes seven self‑guided tours covering topics such as police burials, the McDaniels family, World War II veterans, Civil War history connected to action on Main Street, an overview of veterans, African American burials and a list of prominent citizens with short biographies. Staff said they plan a donor preview and that they will share the public link with the commission soon.

Commissioners encouraged community members who know of other eligible veterans or patriots buried elsewhere to apply for similar markers; the commission said the William G. Pomeroy Foundation provides commemorative markers at no charge and that interested cemeteries can apply.

Next steps: staff will coordinate installation logistics for the April 19 ceremony and circulate the cemetery website link to commission members after a donor preview. No formal action was taken during the Feb. 4 meeting on the marker installation.
