The Animal Advisory Commission received a final recruitment update on Jan. 12 and discussed priorities to forward for the upcoming legislative session.
Assistant city manager reported the recruitment concluded with the city manager appointing Monica Dangler as the next director of Austin Animal Services; Dangler is scheduled to start Feb. 2. Interim director Rolando Fernandez will assist with the transition.
During public comment, attorneys and advocates urged the commission to use local legislative expertise and to press for use of newly appropriated state spay/neuter funding (members cited figures of about $13,000,000 to $13,500,000 in rider funds) and to support veterinary telehealth and other animal-welfare priorities. Commission members debated timing and the January submission window, and decided to authorize a written correspondence to Carrie Rogers requesting the commission be allowed to discuss recommendations at the February meeting and specifically noting interest in state spay/neuter funding and veterinary telehealth. The motion authorized staff to draft and send the letter; it did not finalize specific legislative recommendations. The motion passed unanimously.
The commission closed the meeting after setting a February agenda deadline of Jan. 29 and agreeing to follow up on items raised at the Jan. 12 session.
