Councilmember Teresa Rivera used her Feb. 2 briefing time to preview legislation she will introduce — identified in remarks as CB 121158 — that would update the Seattle Municipal Code to restrict sharing of personal information by city departments.
Rivera said the measure would codify the state "Keep Washington Working" law and close a gap so that departments beyond law enforcement and the courts cannot provide personal information except when an individual requests the sharing, a court issues a warrant, or another legal obligation requires disclosure. "The legislation I'm offering also closes a gap in the code, and in that, it also includes other city departments," Rivera said.
Rivera said the bill was shared with council offices and is scheduled for public-safety committee consideration; she invited colleagues to engage with the proposal in committee. Colleagues thanked Rivera for bringing the matter forward and said they expect committee review and follow-up.
Next steps: Rivera said the bill is scheduled to be heard in the public-safety committee; the briefing did not include a formal introduction or vote. The legislative text of CB 121158 was not read into the record at the briefing and is described in the meeting only in summary terms.
