Board proclaims January 2026 Human Trafficking Prevention Month and highlights regional coordination

The San Mateo County Board of Supervisors on Jan. 27 adopted a proclamation designating January 2026 as National Human Trafficking Prevention Month and described renewed county action ahead of the Super Bowl and other major events.

Supervisor Spear and Supervisor Mueller led the presentation, emphasizing a regional approach with law‑enforcement training and outreach to hospitality, transportation and health providers. District Attorney Steve Wagstaff described a revived human‑trafficking effort that will include a small, focused team in his office working with the sheriff’s office, police chiefs and nonprofit providers to investigate and prosecute trafficking and to target hidden venues such as short‑term rentals.

Wagstaff said recent training events drew about 250 participants and stressed that residents can assist by reporting suspicious activity. Survivors’ service providers at the meeting urged the board to combine enforcement with stronger survivor supports and case coordination; one presenter, Rose (Justice at Last), said legal services and wraparound supports are essential to prevent re‑victimization.

After public comment and board discussion about regional coordination and survivor services, the board approved the proclamation by roll call vote.
