Members of the public used the City Council’s public comment periods on Feb. 4 to press elected officials about housing affordability, zoning and other local concerns.
Sebastian Crawford—who identified himself at the podium—told the council he grew up “borderline homeless” and criticized rising housing costs and development patterns. Crawford said housing prices have "literally gone up 60% in the last 5 years" and accused city policymakers and developers of profiting from the housing shortage.
Crawford added that zoning and permitting costs raise new-home prices and that workers who generate corporate profits are not receiving a fair share. The council did not respond with a formal rebuttal during public comment, but Councilwoman Olivia Diaz later invited Crawford’s representatives to speak with her staff about housing concerns.
Other commenters raised varied items: Eric (Melchizedek Scribe) Nimrod spoke in favor of youth funding and asked the council to scrutinize contract extensions; Nathan Atkins of the Veteran Advocacy Council announced a Feb. 26 veteran pinning ceremony at the Dolores Huerta Community Center; and a speaker identifying only as Shoshanna urged the council to consider the historical background of the Pledge of Allegiance and civic invocations.
No formal council action on housing was taken during the meeting; councilmembers encouraged follow-up conversations with staff and community representatives.
