Canton council approves up to five seasonal public works hires and four summer rec assistants

The Canton City Council authorized the city to advertise for up to five seasonal summer positions to support public works operations and approved advertising for four summer recreation assistant roles.

Staff recommended five hires for summer help in the Public Works Department for 2026; council members expressed questions about whether the positions should be assigned to Public Works or Parks and how duties would be divided. A commissioner summarized citizen feedback about past staffing levels and the council discussed that seasonal employees handle tasks such as roadside striping, parking-lot maintenance, plant watering and weekend plant-watering coverage.

One commissioner summarized the summer recreation program: "the 120 some kids are broken into 2 different groups based on age," and the summer rec assistant roles mostly cover morning activities and occasionally lifeguard duties. The council approved both the five seasonal hires motion and the request to advertise four summer recreation assistant positions by roll call.

Council members noted they can scale staffing if sales-tax receipts decline or other budget pressures arise and that part-time, seasonal workers can be separated from the city payroll more easily than full-time staff if constraints require it.
