The Glendale City Council on Feb. 3 addressed several Design Review Board (DRB) nominations and voted to advance three nominees who are currently serving while directing a panel to reopen recruitment for a licensed architect required by code.
City staff and the city attorney noted that Glendale’s code requires one licensed architect on the DRB. Staff reported that multiple nominees had applied but most were not licensed architects; Mr. Zarifian (spelled in the record as Mr. Zurifian/Zerifian in remarks) is a licensed architect who applied but would require one of the panels to yield its nominee or the council to take other steps to accommodate the code requirement.
Councilmember Brotman moved to reappoint the three nominees who are currently serving to avoid disruption and to assign the panel that nominated Dr. Boyajian to reopen its process to recruit a licensed architect for the fifth seat. Council set a 45‑day timeframe for the panel to identify candidates and report back. A roll call recorded the council’s approvals for the motion.
The council’s direction is procedural: the reappointments proceed and staff will work with the assigned panel to identify a licensed architect candidate and return progress information to the council within the specified timeframe.
