Council reviews boards-and-commissions appointment process and moves into closed session on property and litigation

The Springville City Council discussed processes and timelines for appointing members to boards and commissions. A staff presenter reviewed the existing policy (adopted when the current mayor began a prior term) that staggers initial terms (two- and four-year starts), allows reappointment for eligible members, and requires council ratification of mayoral appointments. The presenter said the ordinance that sets term expirations runs through March 31 and that the last regular council meeting to submit names for April appointments will be March 17.

Councilmembers asked procedural questions about whether current board members must reapply or whether the mayor nominates and the council ratifies; staff and the presiding official clarified the mayor’s nomination role and the process for conferring, checking candidates and placing nominations on a future agenda. The presenter also reminded council that many current board terms are expiring and encouraged members to consider geographic diversity and standard application procedures.

Near the end of the meeting the council approved a motion to adjourn into a closed session to discuss property and litigation. A motion to close for property and litigation was made and seconded; a roll-call vote recorded 'yes' votes by Mindy, Mike, Logan, Karen and Jake, and the council voted to move into the closed session.
