Commission rules on several handicap‑parking requests; one denied, one approved

The commission reviewed multiple handicap‑parking applications during the Feb. 3 meeting and issued different outcomes based on parcel conditions and available nearby placard spaces.

Hilda Ramirez (47 Grove St) attended and described difficulty accessing an inclined driveway and concerns about a neighbor who calls police when residents use a nearby shared handicapped spot. Staff noted an off‑street driveway and an existing shared handicap space at 51 that is available to any valid placard holder and recommended denial. "We don't typically give handicap parking spaces on the street to people who have off‑street parking available to them," a staff member said. Commissioners voted to deny Ms. Ramirez's request and advised dispatch to note the address for mediation in case of 911 complaints.

Tanya Raymond (727 Broadway) described chronic conditions that limit mobility. Staff and commissioners agreed to place a designated on‑street handicap space across the street from 727 Broadway; a motion to do so passed by voice vote. A late attendee, Santos Romeo, asked about the Crescent Avenue parking removal previously approved in the meeting; staff clarified that the Crescent Ave project is still in the design stage and construction will not begin until later in the summer.

Commissioners said they will continue to apply their standard criteria (availability of off‑street parking, proximity to existing placard spaces and public‑safety considerations) when granting or denying on‑street handicap requests.
