Representative Black presented the proposed committee substitute for HB 513, describing a statewide Alzheimer’s disease awareness initiative to be administered by the Department of Elder Affairs. The proposal would fund a public awareness campaign promoting early detection, brain health, clinical trial information, and targeted outreach to those over age 60 and underserved communities.
Representative Black said Florida has high prevalence and rising need, stating: "There are over 580,000 Floridians currently living with Alzheimer's, and that number is projected to rise with our growing senior population." The PCS would establish a website, use the Department of Health’s resource guide, promote provider education in coordination with the Department of Health, and contract with a nonprofit partner through the Department of Elder Affairs.
Karen Murillo of AARP and Tyler Jefferson of the Alzheimer’s Association waived in support. Ranking Member Robinson offered personal testimony about caregiving for a parent with early-onset Alzheimer’s, underscoring the need for public education. Representative Black waived close. The clerk reported the PCS favorably by roll call, 17 yays and 0 nays.
The measure moves forward with subcommittee support; stakeholders asked for continued attention to outreach and equity in implementation.
