City economic development staff delivered a monthly report on Jan. 12 outlining several initiatives to engage local businesses and support downtown activity.
Staff member Nora (identified in the meeting) said she was organizing a series of business outreach events, beginning with a smaller luncheon on Feb. 18 that will invite about six businesses and city staff. She also described a promotional "business bingo" campaign in which participating restaurants will donate coupons or gift cards to be awarded to residents who visit multiple downtown establishments.
Nora said she had met Kimberly, the new Chamber president (last name not provided), and that the Chamber expressed interest in working with the city though staff will continue city-led outreach regardless of chamber activity. "She wanted to reach out, meet me, and she wants to work with us," Nora said.
On planning matters, staff reported a rezoning request (single-family to single-family large) that would allow the property owner to keep a small cow; the item has been reviewed by the planning board and will go to city council. Staff also confirmed Sandy’s quilt shop had completed its approvals and will proceed through the building-permit process.
Nora described other downtown activity including vendors, a possible arcade opening targeted for around spring break, and increased promotional activity by local businesses. No specific funding sources beyond the recently adopted budget amendment were announced during the report.
