The Lake Central School Corporation board spent the Feb. 2 meeting work session reviewing about 10 draft policies covering board mileage, retaking courses, contractor background checks, staff evaluation, live-animal classroom rules and AED maintenance.
Superintendent Dr. Varacco opened the policy review and said the packet included policies “mainly because [of] related function,” and explained the mileage policy (0144.1) can be customized so board members may seek pre-approval for travel reimbursements. “If someone wants to drive to Indy, if the board wants that representation, then the board will approve mileage for that trip,” Speaker 2 said during the discussion, and the board asked staff to add clarifying language to limit reimbursements to travel outside customary conference coverage.
Board members discussed policy 5462 on retaking classes and GPA calculation. The district’s current practice averages the original and retake grades into the GPA rather than replacing the previous grade; staff said that change was adopted after colleges raised questions when transcripts showed repeated courses without both grades visible. Speaker 5 noted some colleges were seeing both attempts and had raised concerns, and Speaker 2 said the policy language was updated to match current practice.
Policy 8121 on contracted services was another focal point. Directors and board members discussed which criminal offenses the director of facilities may evaluate case-by-case and noted the district will not pay for contractors’ background checks — contractors are responsible for those costs. The packet’s language excludes bringing on-campus contractors with offenses tied to contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and allows facilities leadership discretion on certain other offenses after individualized review.
Other policy notes: staff evaluation language was adjusted to reflect that the State Board of Education no longer requires a specific evaluation plan, though the district intends to continue evaluations and may update the plan in the coming year; live animals will be permitted in the classroom for educational purposes with prior principal approval (time limits were removed); and the district will continue annual testing and mapping of AED devices and require coaches to know AED locations.
Board members and staff agreed the policies discussed will come back to the board for formal approval at the next meeting. No final policy votes were taken Feb. 2.
