The California State Senate on Jan. 29 welcomed students and university leaders from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, and unanimously adopted ceremonial resolutions recognizing the certified public accounting profession and National Mentoring Month.
Senator John Laird introduced 23 students and campus leaders, including Cal Poly president Jeffrey Armstrong, asking colleagues to “give a hearty applause” for the students’ achievements. Laird highlighted Cal Poly’s role in supplying hands-on research opportunities and noted its place in the 22-campus California State University system.
Senator Anthony Nilo presented Senate Concurrent Resolution 111, which commemorates the 125th anniversary of the certified public accountant profession in California and recognizes the California Board of Accountancy and the California Society of CPAs. Nilo said the resolution “recognizes the essential role accountants play in maintaining trust, transparency, and integrity in both the public and private sectors.” He also acknowledged CPA leaders in the gallery, including Kristen Latta (president, California Board of Accountancy) and Denise Froming (president and CEO, California Society of CPAs).
Separately, Senator Grove presented SCR 109 to proclaim January 2026 as National Mentoring Month and praised Big Brothers Big Sisters in Central California for mentoring thousands of young people. Grove cited the organization’s work with nearly 21 unified school districts and its impact on students’ lives.
Both resolutions were called for roll-call votes and adopted on voice and roll calls without recorded opposition. Senate officials recorded the adoption of SCR 109 with an announced tally of Ayes 39, Noes 0, and SCR 111 with Ayes 38, Noes 0.
The Senate proceeding continued with other legislative business after the ceremonial items and a gallery photo opportunity for members and guests.
