Representative Weinberger presented CS for HB 9119 to define "major commercial service airports" under the FAA’s medium and large airport categories and to clarify a state role in airport naming. "This... creates a definition for major commercial service airports," Weinberger said, adding the bill designates Palm Beach International Airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport, subject to FAA, trademark holders and Palm Beach County approval.
Representative Porras offered an amendment to clarify the name; the amendment was adopted.
Public testimony included Colton Taylor, who opposed the renaming and criticized the choice on political and ethical grounds: "Please don't support this bill," Taylor said. Palm Beach County representatives waived in support. Debate among members was intense and at times personal: Representative Rayner called the idea "offensive" and noted criminal allegations being asserted about the individual at issue; Representative Saroy and other supporters framed the measure as recognition of the presidency and precedent for naming public infrastructure after presidents.
After debate and the amendment’s adoption the committee voted to report the bill favorably. The renaming is contingent on required federal approvals and trademark holder consent, and local county acceptance, all of which the bill text notes are prerequisites for implementation.
