Bill would move InterNebraska internship program into Department of Labor (LB864)

Sen. Jason Prokop presented LB864 to transfer administration of the InterNebraska program from the Department of Economic Development to the Department of Labor, saying the move aligns the program with other workforce initiatives under Governor Pillen’s Good Life, Great Careers initiative.

Commissioner Katie Thurber supported the transfer, calling it an administrative realignment that would not change the program’s intent or structure. She said the department identified InterNebraska as fitting DOL’s core responsibilities and that moving administration to DOL would strengthen statewide coordination and reduce fragmentation.

Jennifer Krieger, representing the Greater Omaha Chamber and other business groups, said the program is valuable and recommended the transfer, while noting long-term funding should be restored. Sen. Prokop and witnesses discussed prior interim study findings and program metrics; Prokop cited program history (3,700 participants between 2011 and 2021, and additional internships after the state-funded 2022 investment) and referenced data that paid internships increase the probability of retaining talent in Nebraska.

Proponents emphasized the transfer is administrative only and that DOL is prepared to ensure a smooth transition; no formal action was taken during the hearing and witnesses offered to provide additional impact data to the committee for its consideration.
