David McIntyre, Brunswick County emergency management director, announced that Brunswick County offices, including the TAG agency, will be closed tomorrow and urged residents to stay off the roads after an overnight snowstorm and a period of extreme cold.
McIntyre said the county received "a really large amount of snow" that has affected roadways and that the event brought "extreme cold." "We're expecting to see single digit wind chills once again tonight," he said, adding that officials do not expect additional snow from this event and that "temperatures will slowly rise as we move into early next week."
Officials will keep the Emergency Operations Center active to coordinate response. "We'll be managing our EOC for the next at least day or so to ensure we're coordinating with all our partners, to help meet the need of the community," McIntyre said. He listed public safety and infrastructure teams — including EMS, fire departments, law enforcement, water and wastewater crews, electrical companies and cable providers — as working to maintain critical services.
On road safety he warned: "Road conditions are very hazardous, so we want people to stay inside, stay off the road unless you absolutely necessarily have to." He said the Department of Transportation is plowing but that freezing remains a hazard.
McIntyre also gave preparedness guidance: keep supplies such as dry clothes, blankets and space heaters on hand and use them safely. On generators he warned, "Make sure they're not being used in inside your home or your garage. Make sure they're well ventilated and that you're using everything according to manufacturer's specifications and instructions."
He closed by thanking listeners and offering reassurance: "Brunswick County is strong and then we're always ready Brunswick." The county advised residents to monitor official Brunswick County channels for further updates as the EOC remains active.
The announcement functions as an administrative closure notice rather than a formal vote or ordinance; county residents looking for more information should consult Brunswick County's official communications for any subsequent operational updates.
