Huntington council appoints Jessica Lee as new code enforcement and planning officer

The Huntington City Council voted Jan. 21 to appoint Jessica Lee as the city’s new code enforcement and planning and zoning officer after the retirement of the previous official.

Jessica Lee introduced herself to the council, saying, “My name is Jessica Lee. I live over across from the old farm mill on the corner on 400 North … I am interested in keeping our city up to code and beautiful,” and described her local ties and previous city work. Council members moved and seconded the hire and voted to confirm her appointment.

The hire follows the announcement that the current officer, referred to during the meeting as Mr. Arrington, is retiring next month. Council members said the departing staff will provide transition support: the mayor noted the new officer “will have Gary to pick his brain when you need it,” and staff said Mr. Arrington has agreed to assist as a volunteer after his paid service ends.

Council members framed the appointment as part of broader efforts to enforce zoning and building-permit requirements; the mayor reminded residents to obtain zoning clearance and building permits when erecting fences or structures. The council did not discuss salary or contract terms during the public portion of the meeting.

The appointment was made by motion and approved by voice vote. The council welcomed Lee and directed staff to assist with a smooth handover from the retiring officer.
