TDC staff reports steady tourism-tax receipts, readies spring marketing push

TDC staff reported a mixed but generally stable start to the season for tourism development tax (TDT) receipts and outlined marketing plans aimed at sustaining forward bookings.

Peter told the board the TDT series showed October receipts slightly below the prior October (about 1% down), while November came in a little over 3% higher; December is tracking flat or slightly down. Staff described budgetary spending as low in the first quarter (typical for marketing) and said the clerk has improved timely reporting via software, allowing better information flow to the TDC.

Peter said the TDC kicked off a spring marketing campaign and will conduct a sales blitz in Charlotte next month, including travel-agent training, meetings with cruise partners and an on-air promotion featuring an astronaut; staff also noted direct-service promotion from Charlotte to MLB. He reported the marketing support program is active: some events seek reimbursement for expenses while others request that the TDC perform marketing on their behalf; staff (Laura and Deborah) are preparing guidelines for the next year's program, with target guideline discussion likely in March.

Board members briefly discussed lifeguard funding and whether portions of lifeguard budgets would be drawn from capital funds; commissioners noted lifeguard funding decisions ultimately rest with the county commission.

Peter said the next TDC meeting is Feb. 25. The marketing-support program and spring campaign will be returned to the board with updated guidelines in the coming months.
