Public health reports immunizations and inspections; highways urge patience ahead of heavy snow

Jefferson County’s public health director on Jan. 22 presented 2025 activity totals including about 1,908 immunizations, nearly 400 hearing tests in schools, 423 retail food inspections, 114 temporary food inspections and distribution of roughly $150,000 in grant funds to local nonprofits. The department also reported issuing certified birth and death records and expanding outreach through seminars, a monthly radio show and community events.

The public health presentation noted Narcan distribution with short training, emergency-preparedness activities tied to grant requirements (multiple district meetings, trainings and exercises), and a reduction in enforcement penalties compared with the prior year as the department favored education-first approaches before escalating enforcement.

Commissioners asked about measles risk from neighboring states; public health staff said no significant local outbreaks had been reported and that contact tracing had been used to isolate cases when necessary.

The highways representative told the board county trucks and graders were staged for an approaching winter storm (forecast ranges discussed between 3 and 15 inches, with some estimates higher) and asked the public to give crews time to plow and to follow travel advisories. The highways presenter cautioned about drifting and wind, noted potential volunteer support from the sheriff for plowing, and requested patience while crews responded.
