House reads resolution honoring Stan Baker, recounts role in Baker v. State

The Vermont House read House Concurrent Resolution 175 to honor Stan (J. Stannard) Baker of Shelburne. The resolution chronicles Baker's lifetime service as an educator, mental health counselor, and church leader, and notes his role as one of the plaintiffs in Baker v. State (170 Vt. 194), the Vermont Supreme Court decision that helped establish marriage equality under the state constitution and led to Act 91 (2000) and later Act 3 (2009).

The resolution states the General Assembly extends its sincere condolences to Baker's family and directs the Secretary of State to send a copy to the family and the Episcopal Diocese of Vermont. A member from Essex Junction welcomed Baker's husband, Peter Harrigan, and Baker's sister, Peg Harrigan, to the chamber; the guests were recognized by the presiding officer.

Floor members also offered brief remarks recalling Baker's community service. The resolution was read pursuant to the consent calendar.
