The German Village Commission on Feb. 4 approved several Certificates of Appropriateness and set conditions aimed at keeping proposed work consistent with German Village design guidelines.
Commissioners voted to split COA 2501265 (175 East Deshler Ave.) into two parts and approve part A — fence and landscaping — on the condition that the fence be relocated to align with the rear corner of the house and that final drawings be submitted to staff for approval. The commission continued part B, the wooden steps and railing, for more detailed railing drawings and stair design. Applicant representative Bailey Moore told commissioners the client "would be acceptable" to relocating the fence to the rear corner to preserve the neighborhood frontage.
The commission approved COA 2586451 (551 City Park Ave.) to replace a window with a glass door with the clarification that trim conforms to the German Village guidelines (page 78). Applicant and owner Elizabeth Sites confirmed salvaged material would be reused when possible.
For COA 2500836 (3551 City Park Ave.), commissioners approved three wall-mounted HVAC units with conditions: units must be mounted through mortar joints (not through masonry faces) where applicable, and they must be screened from public view. Commissioners agreed an opaque solution — such as a louvered box or an opaque wood gate painted to match siding — could be approved administratively by staff, and required the screening to be set back at least 18 inches behind the façade.
The commission also approved COA 2501358640 (640 Mohawk St.), a rear addition, asking applicants to simplify roof intersections and submit clarifications before issuance of a certificate.
Several applications were continued to a future meeting so applicants could provide additional site plans, scaled drawings, easement documentation or design details. These included Alley-facing parking proposals at 318 Burger Alley (COA 2501281318) and other items where staff and commissioners requested clearer drawings or additional documentation. Where commissioners accepted staff approval as a path forward, final details were to be returned to HPO staff for administrative sign-off.
