Commission commends Friends of the Dunes for returning land to the Wiyot people

Commissioners were told Friends of the Dunes recently returned more than 300 acres to the Wiyot people.

Unidentified Speaker 2 reported the transfer and suggested the commission consider sending congratulations to the Board of Supervisors and issuing a public statement. Unidentified Speaker 1 offered to draft a statement if provided the basic facts. Commissioners discussed using a rapid-response vehicle to publicize the transfer quickly and requested basic factual details be provided to staff so a draft could be circulated for review.

The commission did not record a formal vote on the communication but agreed to place a related item on the next meeting agenda if further action or a formal letter is requested.
