The Osteopathic Medical Board of California on Jan. 22 approved amendments to its 2024–2028 strategic plan to strengthen legislative outreach and expand its stated values.
The board voted to add "accessibility" to its diversity, equity and inclusion language and to adopt a new objective establishing "an OMBC legislative day for board representatives to meet with legislators, highlight the distinct philosophy and contributions of the osteopathic medical profession, and ensure public safety through the board's active voice in legislation." The amended language was read into the public chat before the vote.
Executive Director Erica Calderon presented the package and explained the changes are a mix of administrative updates, a monthly internal newsletter proposal, a formal review process for state and federal legislation, and wording changes to clarify the board’s role in legislative engagement. Board members debated the phrasing of Goal 2.2 at length, focusing on whether language should emphasize protecting a profession’s scope of practice or the board’s public‑safety mandate. Members settled on language that links legislative engagement explicitly to public safety.
After an opportunity for public comment, including brief remarks from stakeholder groups, the board moved to a roll‑call vote and approved the amended strategic plan. The board instructed staff to publish the revised plan through DCA’s publication office and to post the adopted version once formatting is complete.
What happens next: staff will finalize editing and publication of the plan and will follow up with the board on implementation steps for the legislative‑day objective and the planned regular review of legislation affecting the board.
