Municipal court and public defender budgets reviewed as shared‑services arrangement continues

Erica Will, the municipal court administrator, briefed the council on the municipal court and public defender budgets during the Jan. 26 special budget hearing, describing how shared services across neighboring municipalities affect staffing and benefit allocations.

Erica said she is a shared employee between Glenrock, Wyckoff and Ridgewood and that each municipality carries separate payroll accounts and finances. Ridgewood payroll covers two full‑time deputies in the Ridgewood office and a full‑time employee handling parking matters; Glenrock covers other deputies and benefits for certain positions. "All the finances are completely separate," Erica said.

On budget specifics, Erica said interpreting services are primarily provided via a language‑line service that is cost‑effective for rare languages, though live interpreters (including ASL) are occasionally needed and are costly. She also increased the special‑session line to account for probable‑cause hearings and other lengthy matters that will require special sessions. Erica said she already has two matters that will require special sessions, explaining the modest increase in that line item.

Council members asked about employee counts and retirements; Erica confirmed a recent retirement (Maureen Turkstra/Terpstra) and said current employee counts for the municipal court are unchanged from last year aside from planned adjustments. The council thanked Erica for the overview.
