Columbus County readies shelters, warming center and public utilities ahead of hazardous winter outlook

Columbus County's emergency-management director briefed the Board of Commissioners on a hazardous winter-weather outlook that could bring accumulating freezing rain and sleet, potential power outages and prolonged extreme cold. The National Weather Service forecast prompted the county to prepare for possible sheltering, open an emergency operations center (EOC) if necessary, and coordinate with state emergency-management officials.

Kaye Stevenson said the county has established a warming center behind Facts of Life Church at 506 North Lee Street in Whiteville that offers overnight shelter from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., opens when temperatures drop below 40 degrees, and provides hot meals, hygiene kits and lodging. Stevenson urged residents to limit travel if possible, maintain emergency kits (food, water, batteries, blankets), protect pipes from freezing, and check on elderly and vulnerable neighbors.

County manager and public-utilities staff reported logistical preparedness steps: generators will be checked and fueled, staff placed on standby, and equipment prepared for extended response. The county will consider declaring a state of emergency and will notify the board if the EOC opens. The board thanked first responders and county employees for readiness and encouraged residents to monitor official county communications.
