Five members of the public addressed the board during the designated comment period on April 16, raising staffing, scheduling and student‑health concerns.
Meadowlark third‑grade teacher Karen Kempe Schultz urged the board to revise the teacher allocation formula to account for schools with high concentrations of English language learners and newcomers. She said Meadowlark is about 65% ELL with 56% newcomers in one class and argued that one‑size allocation rules (1:24 K–3; 1:28 grades 4–6) produce inequitable class sizes and increase teacher turnover.
A Bonneville parent asked trustees not to change that school’s 8:40 a.m. start time to an earlier hour. The parent stressed that Bonneville is a walking school with few buses, cited a student fatality from a vehicle strike last year and said an earlier start could put children at risk walking in the dark.
A representative for Bonneville Terrace read a written request for more comprehensive data before the board decides Washington Elementary’s magnet status, specifically enrollment and projected enrollment by grade and magnet site, and percent participation by assigned magnet site. Other speakers raised concerns about ESSER‑funded contract positions proposed on the agenda and the district’s paraprofessional staffing levels.
A West High parent described persistent bathroom vaping and requested that the school consider an outdoor smoking/vaping area to reduce in‑building exposure, citing public health literature and an anecdote about prior litigation tied to secondhand smoke.
Board members thanked speakers and noted that public comment topics might be routed to staff for follow‑up or placed on a future agenda for board action where appropriate.
