Parents and community speakers press board on academic outcomes, transparency and governance

Multiple community members used the public-comment period at the Jan. 22 board meeting to press the board on academic performance and transparency.

Tamika Houston said families and caregivers ‘‘have been directly affected by the district’s ongoing academic struggles’’ and urged the board to conduct a transparent, community-inclusive search for the new superintendent and to prioritize candidates with documented turnaround experience.

Lawrence Blaber asked the board to clarify how it will replace a trustee’s seat if that trustee runs for higher office and whether the board will follow an appointment process or allow voters to decide. He called current communications on the matter ‘‘uncomfortable’’ and requested a public explanation of the procedure the board will use.

Michael Barksdale urged the board to act with urgency and intellectual honesty to improve outcomes, noting community presentations that offer potential blueprints for change. Gloria Dolson offered public praise for the newly appointed superintendent and encouraged greater youth engagement in district governance.

Responses: Board members acknowledged the comments and said they will provide communication about the replacement process for the trustee’s seat and that the board values community input in hiring decisions.
