Board flags Siemers liability as budget pressure; search committee meetings to remain confidential

Board leadership framed the meeting as the start of budget season, emphasizing the district's obligation to balance student needs with taxpayer impacts as many residents face property tax reassessments. The chair told the board the district faces additional fiscal pressure, stating that costs associated with "Siemers" "may include a $2,200,000 liability to our town of Ellington."

The board also discussed the superintendent search: the search committee is composed of all 10 board members and has received proposals from six hiring firms. The chair said search committee meetings "are not FOI able" and must be kept confidential to protect applicants, adding that the committee is working with attorney Tom Mooney to ensure compliance with Connecticut law.

Acting Superintendent Oliver Barton presented draft superintendent goals relating to academic excellence, conditions for learning and operational effectiveness, including work on artificial intelligence guidance for instruction and using data visualization tools. Barton said the goals are drafts to be reviewed and approved at a subsequent meeting.

Barton also announced that, per district policy on donations, the superintendent had accepted an anonymous $5,500 gift designated for Club America at the high school.

Next steps: the board will continue budget deliberations in committee and at future board meetings; the search committee will continue confidential candidate screening with legal counsel, and superintendent goals will return as a formal vote at the next meeting.
