Mableton City Council approved a resolution to temporarily pause issuing individual alcohol server/work permits for employees while staff negotiates a background-check process or agreement with a law-enforcement partner.
La'Maya Edmonds, the city's business license supervisor, said the city currently uses a third-party vendor (Georgia Applicant Processing Services, GAPS) because it lacks an internal police processing pathway. Edmonds described the vendor process as “administratively burdensome” and said it has created delays and increased costs for applicants who are trying to begin work. "The process is a little bit more convoluted than going to the police department and having them run a background check on the spot," Edmonds said.
Council discussion clarified that the pause affects individual employee server permits only; establishment alcohol licenses will continue to be issued and licensees remain responsible for compliance with city and state alcohol-handling requirements. A city representative said staff is negotiating with Cobb County and other partners on a service-delivery approach and will return with a permanent solution. Council approved the resolution by voice vote.
