Surry County commissioners used the meeting’s public portion to recognize student achievement and hear updates from community organizations.
The board presented certificates of recognition to members of the East Surry High School quiz‑bowl team, including Nate Parish, and thanked volunteers and the Mount Airy Museum of Regional History for hosting the meeting. Representatives praised the students’ regional championship and invited the county to continue supporting academic events.
Public commenters also updated the board on county‑wide farmers markets. Joe Silesic, speaking for the market board, said the county now supports four markets (including a new Pilot Mountain market and a Dobson opening), reported roughly 45 vendors participate across markets, and described a senior voucher program that gives eligible seniors $50 in produce vouchers.
Library staff told the board the county library launched a new streaming service (Hoopla) available to cardholders; staff offered information on obtaining or using library cards and asked commissioners to spread the word about the new service.
The board acknowledged the civic groups’ work, encouraged residents to attend upcoming community events, and thanked volunteers for support at recent local festivals.
