Council approves James Humphreys for planning commission after failed tabling motion

The South Ogden City Council approved the appointment of James Humphreys to the city planning commission on Jan. 20, 2026, following an unsuccessful attempt to postpone consideration.

Council discussion began when members removed the planning-commission nomination from the consent calendar for separate consideration. One motion sought to table the appointment to Feb. 10 and to hold a closed-session discussion; council members debated procedural questions about whether character and competence issues required an explicit closed-session motion. The roll-call on that tabling motion was called and the council chair said the motion failed, reporting the result as "2 to 5." The chair then accepted a motion by Councilmember Ritchie to approve the appointment.

The approval was taken by voice and later summarized in the meeting as a 6-to-1 vote in favor. The council invited Humphreys forward; he thanked members for their trust and said he would work to make development decisions easier for the council in coming years.
