On Jan. 28 the Planning and Zoning Board approved two commercial sign permit requests by unanimous vote.
Sign permit 2026-001 (Milan Jewelry) covers a non-illuminated dimensional-letter storefront sign at 5786 West 8th Street. Contractor Jose Pacheco told the board the letters are plastic and non-illuminated; staff confirmed the proposed 20.25 square feet is within the 148.8-square-foot allowance under the city's code. The board had no objection and approved the permit 5-0.
Sign permit 2026-002 seeks permission for a beauty supply tenant at 6230 Southwest 8th Street to add the words "beauty supply" to two awnings and several storefront panels. Applicant Ruben Garcia said the request uses the same understated lettering and style previously approved for other panels; the additions total about 63.81 square feet and would bring the aggregate signage to roughly 105.8 square feet of the allowed 365.4 square feet. Board members discussed whether signage should be limited to the awning above the building's entrance to avoid confusion at other doors; others said the proposed lettering is understated and maintains symmetry. The board voted 5-0 to approve the application as submitted.
Both approvals were non-illuminated and staff confirmed required address posting and other code conditions would be satisfied.
