Cultural Affairs chair asks committees to support expanded 250th Fourth of July celebration

Felicia Salazar, chairperson of the Cultural Affairs Committee, used the task force’s public-comment period to ask for cross-committee support for an expanded Fourth of July celebration next summer, calling the year a once-in-a-generation 250th anniversary and urging help with sponsors and programming.

Salazar said organizers have begun outreach to state and federal partners and are exploring a range of activities: food trucks, children’s activities, historical reenactments and a potential visit from the Freedom Truck, a mobile museum she described as an educational exhibit. "This year, marks the 200 and fiftieth anniversary of our independence," Salazar said, asking members to review recordings of a subcommittee meeting and to send ideas and contact information so the event can be planned in coordination with other committees.

She emphasized the event's scale and sponsorship needs, noting last year’s park event drew near 10,000 people and that bringing a mobile museum would increase expected demand. Salazar said sponsorships will determine programming scope and asked the task force to consider staffing, volunteer support and promotion; she offered to circulate links and resources for teachers and partners.

Next steps: Salazar asked committee members to email ideas and said the Cultural Affairs subcommittee will return with more concrete sponsorship and logistics details at a future meeting. The task force did not take formal action on the July 4 request during this meeting; the presentation was recorded for follow-up.
