At the Jan. 12 Berkeley County meeting, public commenters raised safety and oversight concerns. Claire Allen of 310 New Leaf Loop in Nexton asked council to address traffic safety at the Winding Branch/Nexton Parkway intersection and to clarify how Nexton Improvement District funds—collected from residents—may be used. Allen described difficulty making turns at the intersection, higher-than-posted speeds and a radar sign that is out of service; she asked whether district funds could pay for improvements or speed mitigation.
Mary Lucas of 405 Bristol Cone in Tall Pines said homeowners had repeatedly sought an audit of the Tall Pines Special District after council and the Committee on Finance voted on Aug. 8, 2022 to hire an auditor and legal counsel. Lucas told council she and other homeowners have received FOIA responses indicating no records matched their requests and asked for the audit status; council responded, "We'll be in touch." No immediate resolution was offered on the record.
Council did not take immediate action on either public comment item at the Jan. 12 meeting but recordings of the comments were acknowledged and staff indicated they would follow up.
